What to Bring
The 10 Essentials (navigation, extra layers, headlamp, first-aid kit, extra food/water, etc.)
Proper Footwear: Trail runners work, but hiking boots are recommended for traction.
Layers: Weather can change quickly in the Gorge, so bring a windproof/rain jacket.
Trekking Poles (optional): Helpful for stability on the steep descent.
Plenty of Water: There are no refilling stations on the trail. A reliable guideline for many people is to carry one liter of water for every five miles of hiking.
Trail Etiquette & Safety
Leave No Trace: Pack out all trash, including dog waste (no leaving bags on the trail!).
Stay on the Trail: Protect delicate ecosystems and prevent costly erosion by avoiding shortcuts and do not cut switchbacks.
Wildlife: Expect to see birds, squirrels, and possibly deer. Give wildlife space.
Weather Check: Conditions can change fast, so check forecasts before heading out (NOAA Forecast).
Best Time to Hike
Spring: Wildflowers bloom, and waterfalls are at peak flow.
Summer: Warmer weather but more crowded. Hike early for solitude.
Fall: Crisp air and golden foliage.
Winter: Possible snow—come prepared with microspikes if it is icy.
Final Thoughts
Hamilton Mountain Loop is a must-do for hikers who want to push their limits while soaking in some of the best views in the Gorge. It is a perfect challenge for those who are training for backpacking or want to level up their hiking game.
