Your First Backpack: 6 Steps to Choose the Perfect Pack

Ready to Hit the Trail? Let’s Find the Backpack That’s Right for You!

Choosing your first backpack can feel overwhelming—so many sizes, features, and brands. Trail Daddy has your back (literally). Here are the six steps to take when buying your first beginner backpack:

1. Define Your Backpacking Goals

What adventures are you planning? Whether planning a weekend getaway, a day hike, or a multi-day trek, your goals will guide your choices.

2. Know Your Capacity Needs

Backpacks are measured in liters. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Day hikes: 20–40 liters

  • Weekend trips: 40–65 liters

  • Multi-day treks: 70+ liters

Pick the size that fits your adventure style. With appropriate gear in tow, I can use my 40-liter REI Backpack for both day hikes and three-day backpacking trips on the Loowit Trail around Mt. St. Helens. But it’s essential to have the right gear for this to work.

3. Get the Right Fit

Comfort is king. Measure your torso length and hip circumference, or visit a gear shop to get fitted. A well-fitted pack shifts weight to your hips and saves your shoulders.

4. Focus on Key Features

Look for:

  • Padded hip belts

  • Adjustable shoulder straps

  • Ventilation to keep your back cool

  • Need extras like rain covers, hydration compatibility, or gear loops? Make a list of your must-haves.

5. Test Before You Buy

Try on a few packs in-store with weight added to simulate actual use. Adjust the straps, walk around, and ensure nothing pinches or rubs the wrong way.

6. Balance Quality with Budget

You don’t need the most expensive pack, but durability and comfort are worth the investment. Brands like Osprey, Deuter, and Gregory are beginner-friendly and reliable. Some brands, despite being more expensive, have generous lifetime warranties. it’s like buying insurance for your gear.
